Deactivate Google Assistant - Here's how (Android)

The voice assistant "Google Assistant" has been part of the basic standardization of the smartphone operating system since Android 6.0 - but not everyone is a fan of the function. If you can't do anything with the assistant or want to switch off the constant "listening" of the microphone, you can deactivate the Google Assistant with a few simple steps. Before you can deactivate the Google Assistant, you must first open the app. To do this, long tap on the home button of your smartphone or tablet.

Since Google Assistant is a system app that belongs to the Google services on Android, the assistant cannot be easily uninstalled. However, it can be switched off completely without any problems.

If you don't want to deactivate the entire wizard at all, just the "OK Google" function so that the wizard can no longer be started by voice command, this is also possible. Deactivate Google Assistant - Instructions for Android

The menu names and items may differ slightly depending on the Android and app version. To deactivate the Google Assistant on your smartphone or a device connected to your Google account, proceed as follows:

  1. Opens the settings of your Android smartphone.
  2. Swipe down to the "Google" menu item and tap on it.
  3. In the following menu, tap on "Account Services".
  4. Selects "Google Search, Google Assistant and voice input".
  5. Tap on "Google Assistant".
  6. Select the "Assistant" tab and swipe down.
  7. Now select under "Assistant devices" the device on which you want to deactivate the voice assistant - in our case "smartphone".
  8. Finally, tap the "Google Assistant" switch to set it to Off (gray & left).

The Google Assistant is now completely deactivated in all apps and on the device itself. If you miss the help function, you can easily reactivate the voice assistant: press and hold the home button for a little longer or use the gesture control (Android 10 and higher) and swipe diagonally from the lower corner of the screen to the center of the screen. Then Android asks you if you want to reactivate the Google Assistant.

If you want to reactivate the voice assistant on another device, you have to do it in the same way as the deactivation.
