The number of deaths from coronavirus in Italy rose to 12.

The number of deaths due to coronavirus infection in Italy has risen to 12, with a total of 374 cases since the beginning of the epidemic, the head of the Italian Civil Protection Service Angelo Borrelli said at a press conference in Rome on Wednesday.

Borrelli, who was appointed by the government on 31 January as commissioner for the implementation of the state of emergency in connection with the spread of coronavirus, said that the total number of infected people includes all dead and recovered people.

Eleven deaths had previously been reported. All of them had been recorded in northern Italy in the Lombardy and Veneto regions. 

🔹 All the deceased were elderly people, some of them suffering from serious chronic diseases.

On Wednesday morning, the authorities of Emilia Romagna officially announced the first fatal outcome of coronavirus infection in the region. 

It was a 70-year-old patient permanently residing in Lombardy. He died in a hospital in Piacenza. According to medical reports, the man suffered from serious illness.

Besides, on Wednesday it became known about the recovery of a Chinese tourist, who is undergoing treatment with her husband at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome.

At the end of January, the elderly couple, who came on holiday to Italy, was diagnosed with coronavirus. It was the first case of infection in the Apennines. Tourists were immediately placed in the Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute. 

Their condition was initially assessed by doctors as severe. However, on February 21, the coronavirus test in the man was negative for the first time. On Wednesday, a similar result was obtained during a test of the woman.
