Eleven deaths had previously been reported. All of them had been recorded in northern Italy in the Lombardy and Veneto regions.

At the end of January, the elderly couple, who came on holiday to Italy, was diagnosed with coronavirus. It was the first case of infection in the Apennines. Tourists were immediately placed in the Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute.
Their condition was initially assessed by doctors as severe. However, on February 21, the coronavirus test in the man was negative for the first time. On Wednesday, a similar result was obtained during a test of the woman.
