Astronomers say that Elon Musk's Starlink satellites "blinded" their telescopes

The launch of SpaceX's Starlink satellites is a major event for astronomers worldwide.

Elon Musk's project is criticized for preventing telescopes from working on Earth due to light pollution.

So far, the Starlink mission has placed 120 satellites in orbit, but Elon Musk hopes to create a network of 12,000 within a short distance of the planet. His goal is to offer broadband internet globally.

The social networks are full of astronomers' alerts, who believe the effects are immediate. Clarae Martínez-Vázquez, of the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (Chile), denounced that the recent launch of SpaceX succeeded in blinding the Dark Energy Chamber (DECam).

I'm in shock!, she said because the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) exposure was greatly affected. She assured that the reaction of the satellites lasted more than five minutes. "This isn't great," she said.

Wow!! I am in shock!! The huge amount of Starlink satellites crossed our skies tonight at @cerrotololo. Our DECam exposure was heavily affected by 19 of them! The train of Starlink satellites lasted for over 5 minutes!! Rather depressing… This is not cool!

For his part, American astronomer Cliff Johnson published a photograph of the image captured by DECam, as proof of the light pollution caused by Elon Musk's artificial satellites.

Elon Musk: an environmental hero?

Criticism of the Starlink project comes from all sides. NASA astrophysicist Simon Porter questioned the "legacy" of SpaceX's founder and CEO.

Starlink is and always has been an investment scam. It exists to make institutional investors feel like they're going to make near term profit off of SpaceX. That is a fantasy.

Simon Porter @AscendingNode.I'm sure Musk imagines himself some sort of environmental hero for selling electric cars, but his true, lasting environmental legacy will be as the man who polluted the heavens.

Surely Musk imagines himself as a kind of environmental hero for selling electric cars, but his true enduring environmental legacy will be like the man who polluted the skies, he wrote on his Twitter account.

Harvard-Smithsonian Astrophysics Center researcher Jonathan McDowell warns that once all satellites are in orbit, it will be a matter of "everyday" occurrence that the telescopes are affected.

SpaceX promises to paint the satellites black to minimize the effects, but Elon Musk himself argued in May that currently "there are 4,900 satellites in orbit and people notice that a good 0 percent of the time.
